Botox is a diluted, purified form of botulism toxin type A. It’s a substance that temporarily blocks the neural transmission between the nerves and the muscles, which temporarily blocks or reduces the activity of the muscle into which is it injected.

In former times Botox was used for the treatment of muscle spasms and hyperhidrosis. Nowadays Botox is also used for cosmetic purposes and more specifically to reduce wrinkles.

Botox is injected into specific superficial facial muscles. After 3 to 4 days these muscles will relax and the wrinkles will smoothen or even disappear. An expert in administering Botox injections will try to block the contaction of the muscles only partially, so that the facial expressions of the patient remain natural. After 3 to 4 months the effect of Botox wears off and the muscle function is restored progressively.

1. Horizontal frontal wrinkles
2. Vertical wrinkles between the eyebrows
3. Wrinkles in the lateral corner of the eyes (crow’s feet)

Botox is a very safe product and has no known long-term side effects. If, however, Botox is not administered by a experienced physician who continuously attends advanced training courses, the patient can experience local side effets of a transitory nature caused by an injection in the wrong muscle or by the administration of the wrong quantity of Botox in the area concerned.

4. Upper and lower lip
5. Neck wrinkles

Wrinkle Treatment:

Two hours before the wrinkle treatment an anaesthetic cream (EMLA) is applied to the areas concerned. The skin is carefully cleaned and disinfected. With a very fine needle the product is injected into the skin. The quantities depend on the depth of the wrinkles. The results are immediate. Immediately after the wrinkle treatment the skin is usually a little red and swollen. You are advised to apply ice for a couple of minutes.
